200 years of Mataró’s history

Guided tour of the Capuchin Cemetery, a place rich in history and art.

The Capuchin Cemetery is the city’s most important Neoclassical complex, an open-air museum featuring graves, pantheons, mausoleums and funerary sculptures that tell the story of 200 years of Mataró’s history.

The remains of several notable figures are buried here, including Miquel Biada, the driving force behind the first railway; architect, politician and historian Josep Puig i Cadafalch; trade unionist Joan Peiró; artists Jaume and Jordi Arenas; archaeologist Marià Ribas; poet Josep Punsola; and singer Pere Pubill Calaf “Peret”, among many others.
