Easter in Mataró

From March 24th to March 31st

Mataró is home to one of the most famous Easter celebrations in Catalonia. There are around twelve events in total, with processions and parades by various brotherhoods and other associations, including the Armats de Mataró, a legion of Roman soldiers!

One of the most outstanding events is the Arrest of Jesus procession, on the afternoon of Palm Sunday, a popular stretch of which is the Baixada de les Escaletes, where the participants run up the hill. Other worthwhile events include the Armats’ parade through the streets of Mataró and their homage to the city on Maundy Thursday, then the General Procession, considered part of Mataró’s Cultural Heritage, on Good Friday, which involves participation from all the city’s brotherhoods, associations and the Armats.

Sunday April 13

XXXIV SAETAS MORNING

11 AM. Parc de Cerdanyola. 

The square is full of people. Passion and desire to follow the ritual listening the classical saetas, as well as the typical songs of the Easter Week.

Scenification of the moment when Judas betrayed Jesus in fornt of the Sanhedrin

ARREST PROCESSION

18.30 PM . From the  Basílica de Santa Maria. 

On the afternoon of Palm Sunday, just after the staging of the arrest, the Mystery of Jesus Captive procession through the streets of the city center accompanied by its Musical Group.

Thursday april 17

FLAG COLLECTION AND TRIBUTE TO THE CITY

19.15 PM  Basílica of  Santa Maria

Route: carrer Sant Simó  , carrer  Beata Maria , Basílica  Santa Maria (flag collection) and plaça de  Santa Maria. (The flag collection ceremony is over),  Plaça Santa Maria, carrer de Santa Maria, Plaça Gran, carrer de  Sant Cristòfol, la Peixateria ,  carrer de Barcelona and La Riera.

20.00 PM  Plaça de l’Ajuntament

The Armats pay tribute to the city abd the public enjoy various scenes and pictures.

PROCESSION OF THE NIGHT OF SILENT 

21.30 PM Basílica Santa Maria

The essense of last century´s processions can be felt on the Night od Silence, a very spiritual procession.


Route: Santa Maria, sant Francesc d´Assis, muralla dels Genovesos, plaça dels Bous, La Riera, carrer Nou, basílica de Santa Maria.
