Easter in Mataró

From March 27 to April 5

Mataró is home to one of the most famous Easter celebrations in Catalonia. There are around twelve events in total, with processions and parades by various brotherhoods and other associations, including the Armats de Mataró, a legion of Roman soldiers!

One of the most outstanding events is the Arrest of Jesus procession, on the afternoon of Palm Sunday, a popular stretch of which is the Baixada de les Escaletes, where the participants run up the hill. Other worthwhile events include the Armats’ parade through the streets of Mataró and their homage to the city on Maundy Thursday, then the General Procession, considered part of Mataró’s Cultural Heritage, on Good Friday, which involves participation from all the city’s brotherhoods, associations and the Armats.

Sunday, March 29

XXXIV SAETAS MORNING

  • 11 AM. Parc de Cerdanyola.
  • The square is full of people. Passion and desire to follow the ritual listening the classical saetas, as well as the typical songs of the Easter Week.

STAGING OF THE ARREST

  • 18 PM . Plaça de Santa Maria
  • Scenification of the moment when Judas betrayed Jesus in fornt of the Sanhedrin

ARREST PROCESSION

  • 18.30 PM . From the Basílica de Santa Maria.
  • On the afternoon of Palm Sunday, just after the staging of the arrest, the Mystery of Jesus Captive procession through the streets of the city center accompanied by its Musical Group.

Thursday, April 2

FLAG COLLECTION AND TRIBUTE TO THE CITY

  • 19.00 PM Basílica of Santa Maria
  • Route: carrer Sant Simó , carrer Beata Maria , Basílica Santa Maria (flag collection) and plaça de Santa Maria. (The flag collection ceremony is over), Plaça Santa Maria, carrer de Santa Maria, Plaça Gran, carrer de Sant Cristòfol, la Peixateria , carrer de Barcelona and La Riera.
  • 20.00 PM Plaça de l’Ajuntament
  • The Armats pay tribute to the city abd the public enjoy various scenes and pictures.

PROCESSION OF THE NIGHT OF SILENT

  • 21.30 PM Basílica Santa Maria
  • The essense of last century´s processions can be felt on the Night od Silence, a very spiritual procession.
  • Route: Santa Maria, sant Francesc d´Assis, muralla dels Genovesos, plaça dels Bous, La Riera, carrer Nou, basílica de Santa Maria.
  • Organised by: Armats de Mataró, Confraternity de l’Oració del Senyor a l’Hort, Confraternity de la Coronació d’Espines i Venerable Congregation de la Mare de Déu dels Dolors.

INTERPARROQUIAL VIA CRUCIS

  • 8.00 AM from Santa Maria
  • Since the middle of the 17 th century, the Via Crucis has kept the same route.
  • Route: Basílica Santa Maria, Sant Francesc d´Asis, Portal del Valldeix, Camí Fondo, carrer de les Monges, L’Esplanada, Psg. Antoni Martí Cababellas, Cementiry Caputinxs.
  • Organised by: Parishes of Mataró.

MATARÓ GENERAL PROCESSION

  • 19.00 PM from Santa Maria
  • The general procession, which is considered cultural heritage of Mataró, is attended by all of the fraternities and brotherhoods and the Armats de Mataró. Moments with special charm are the silence when leaving Plaça de Santa Maria, the section in carrer Argentona and the end at Plaça de Santa Anna.

SILENCE PROCESSION

  • 17.30 PM from Mare de Déu de l'Esperança church
  • On Saturday afternoon and from the Church of the Mother of Déu de l'Esperança, located between the neighborhoods of Rocafonda and dels Molins, this procession leaves that reflects the loneliness of Mary having her Son in the tomb.
  • It is especially interesting to contemplate the passage of the procession through the street Mare de Déu de l'Esperança where some neighbors sing saetas, as well as the ascent through the Avenida del Velòdrom and the arrival at the Casa de la Hermandaz de Nuestra Señora de la soledas in the Ronda Jaume Ferran.
