If you prefer to explore Mataró at your own pace, head to the Tourist Office, where you will find a leaflet with all the information and directions you need to go on four themed self-guided tours. There are four routes available: Baroque, Neoclassical, Modernism and Sixteenth Century.
In the sixteenth century, Mataró was a medieval town, built around the Santa Maria Church and Plaça Gran. The route will take you to various townhouses and farmhouses, including Casa Milà, Escolà, Vila Picó and Serra Arnau, which currently houses Mataró Museum.
The Baroque route passes by the Santa Maria Basilica, the city’s squares and typical Mataró houses, known as cases de cós. Meanwhile, the Modernist route highlights the legacy of architects Josep Puig i Cadafalch and Antoni Gaudí in the city. Finally, on the Neoclassical route, you will see some of the fascinating Neoclassical buildings and sites that remain in Mataró, built by one of the best Catalan architects of the era: Miquel Garriga i Roca.
