Markets with History

From the Past to the Table

This activity invites you to discover the history of Mataró’s markets and how they have evolved over the centuries. Through a guided tour of Plaça Gran and its surroundings and Plaça de Cuba, participants will explore places connected with the city’s commercial activity from Roman times to the present day.

The visit will end at Plaça de Cuba with a tasting of three dishes —starter, main course and dessert— paired with a selection of Catalan wines.

The gastronomic experience will be led by chef Maria Agüera, who runs the Ca la Maria butcher’s shop at the Plaça de Cuba Market.

The event will also feature Josep Floriach, a farmer from Collits a Casa, who will explain the origin and characteristics of the locally sourced products used to prepare the dishes.

To round off the event, there will be a surprise prize draw among attendees featuring several gifts linked to the local area and locally sourced products.

An experience combining history, heritage, gastronomy and local produce to understand how markets have been one of the main drivers of Mataró’s social and economic life over the centuries.
