The beaches of Mataró – best smoke-free

Let’s make our beaches a better place

In Mataró, we want to promote beaches that are healthier, more sustainable, safer and more inclusive for everyone. That is why we are running an awareness campaign to prevent smoking on the beach and reduce the impact of cigarette ends on the sand and the marine environment.

Refraining from smoking on the beach is something that helps to improve people’s health, protect the natural environment and promote harmonious community relations.

Smoke-free beaches

Smoking is harmful to health, both for smokers and for those breathing the smoke around them. Cigarette ends are also a highly polluting form of waste and have a strong impact on the sand, the sea and the environment.

We therefore ask that you refrain from smoking on the beaches and do not leave cigarette ends on the sand. By doing this, you are helping to make Mataró’s beaches cleaner, healthier and more pleasant places for everyone.

A smoke-free beach is also a healthier beach. And to enjoy yourself there safely and comfortably, it is important to bear in mind other health and safety recommendations.

Healthy beaches

To make the most of the beaches as healthy spaces, we recommend you follow these tips:

Protect yourselves from the sun:

  • Apply sun protection products.
  • Avoid the hours of peak sunshine, from 12 noon to 4 pm.
  • Seek shelter in the shade or under a parasol.

Keep hydrated:

  • Drink water regularly, especially during the hottest part of the day.

Look after the surroundings:

  • Please use the waste bins.
  • Do not leave rubbish on the sand.
  • Please refrain from smoking to help ensure a healthier beach that is more inclusive for everyone.

Safe beaches

Beaches are places for leisure and, in the summer bathing season, they are equipped with facilities as well as lifeguard and first-aid services to make them safer and prevent health risks.

It is important to always follow the instructions of the lifeguard service and to heed the messages indicated by the flags:

  • 🟢 Green: bathing permitted.
  • 🟡 Yellow: bathe with caution.
  • 🔴 Red: bathing prohibited.

Please also bear the following recommendations in mind:

  • Always bathe in supervised areas.
  • Enter the water gradually.
  • Wet your wrists and the back of your neck before diving in.
  • If you are stung by a jellyfish, go to the nearest first-aid post.

With everyone’s cooperation, we can make Mataró’s beaches healthier, safer, cleaner and smoke-free spaces.
